THE SPANISH LANGUAGE
Spanish is the most spoken Iberian Romance language in the world. With the Roman occupation of Hispania came Vulgar Latin, considered to be the root of
Castilian Spanish. Spanish as a language originated in the region of Cantabria. During the Reconquista
(718 – 1492), Spanish spread throughout the Kingdom of Castile,
where it was used as the language of government and trade. When the
kingdoms of
Spain were united in the late 15th century, Antonio de Nebrija
published the first treatise on the language. The colonisation of the
New World by the Spanish spread their language throughout the continents.
With 322 million mother-tongue speakers and 70 million second language speakers, Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world.
Spanish is the official or co-official language
of 22 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba,
Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equitorial Guinea, Guatemala,
Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico,
Spain, Western Sahara, Uruguay and Venezuela. In the United States
there are more than 30 million speakers.
