THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE
Italian (italiano) is a Romance language that originates from Vulgar Latin. The first texts that can be considered to be truly Italian date from the 10th century. In Italy, numerous
languages were spoken in the different city/states and the Italian Language did not become standardised until the early 14th century. The mixing of the
languages from the south of Italy
with the Tuscan tongue by Dante Alighieri in the epic poems of his
Commedia were widely read throughout Italy and became the
“canonical standard” that could be understood by everyone.
By the time Italy was unified in 1861, the Florentine language had influenced Italian by means of the
Accademia della Crusca, thus creating the base of the standard language that is spoken today.
Italian ranks 21st in the list of the world’s most spoken languages, with a total of 61 million native speakers.
Italian is the official or co-official language
in Croatia (Istria County), Italy, San Marino, Slovenia, Switzerland
(Grigioni and Ticino Cantons) and the Vatican. It is also spoken in
Monaco, Malta, Corsica, Nice, Albania, Ethiopia, Somalia, Libya,
Tunisia and Eritrea and there are major communities of speakers in
Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, United States, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela,
Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Australia.
