THE GERMAN LANGUAGE - LANGUAGE COURSES · VALENCIA · SPAIN
The German language (Deutsch) is an Indo-European
language that dates back to the Migration Period (from 300 to 700 AD) and the separation of the
German dialects. The term High German corresponds to the first stage of the German language, with texts dating from the 6th century. Following a radical simplification of inflection in the language, the period of Middle High German began (circa 1050). For centuries, the only unifying force concerning the several German dialects spoken throughout Europe was the attempt of writers to employ the language in a manner that could be universally understood. It was not until the 18th century that a widely-accepted "standard" German was created. The publication of grammatical and orthographical rules in the Duden dictionary in 1860 signals the beginning of modern German as it is used today.
The German language is mainly spoken in
Germany, Austria, two thirds of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the South Tyrol province in Italy, in the small East Cantons of Belgium and in the South Jutland County in Denmark.
With 100 million native speakers and a further 20 million who use it as a second
language, German is currently listed as number 11 in the list of most spoken
languages in the world.
