THE CHINESE LANGUAGE
Chinese (hànyu 汉语/漢語) is a
language (or language family) that belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family of
languages. Throughout its four-thousand-year history, the Chinese
language has endured a long and complicated process of development. Until the mid-twentieth century, the majority of the population of Southern China only spoke local dialects. With the creation of an education system that included Standard Mandrian as the
language of instruction, a common language was established for the whole country.
Chinese is the world's most spoken language (the Mandarin dialect alone boasts some 915 million speakers) and it is estimated that the mother tongue of one fifth of the world's population is a variant of
Chinese.
Standard Mandarin is the official language of the People's Republic of
China and Taiwan, and it is one of the
official languages of Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.
